On a warm spring night, about 200 pedestrian advocates gathered at Atwater Crossing for our first-ever karaoke fundraiser for walking in L.A. As the crowd sampled craft beers and delicious flatbreads from the ATX Kitchen, dozens of brave walkers took to the stage with the help of the awesome KJ Paul to belt out walking-friendly songs. We covered all the standards—”Walking on Sunshine,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” Walk the Line,” “Walking After Midnight,” “These Boots Are Made for Walking”—rediscovered a few lesser-known walking surprises—”Every Little Step,” “Walk the Dinosaur”—and we even had some improv, like the urban planner version of “Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About”: “Let’s Give Them Something to Walk Around.”
Of course we closed with “Walking in L.A.” but sang “Everyone walks in L.A.!”
One of the highlights of the evening was an incredible rendition of “I Love L.A.” sung as “I Walk L.A.” by the one and only Durt Rambis. “Santa Monica Boulevard! We walk it!”
But it wasn’t all about singing our hearts out. We raised over $3000! The money is being used to hire our first part-time employee who will help with our campaigns to make walking in L.A. more safe, accessible and fun. We couldn’t have done it without you, so here are a few thank yous.
Huge thanks to our donors who contributed over $75 to Los Angeles Walks!
