Los Angeles Walks is a member-driven nonprofit working to transform the city’s streets into vibrant, people-centered spaces. Founded in 1998 by urban planner and designer Deborah Murphy, the organization advocates for equitable infrastructure so that everyone can move through their communities with dignity and ease.
Despite its car-centric reputation, Los Angeles already walks. From bustling sidewalks in Koreatown to neighborhood strolls in Boyle Heights, walking is essential to how Angelenos connect. Los Angeles Walks champions this reality by pushing for safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable walking conditions for all.
Under Executive Director Alex Ramirez, Los Angeles Walks is committed to a community-driven approach to making streets safer and more welcoming for everyone.
As a Mexican immigrant and urban planner, Alex works with diverse neighborhoods to reclaim public spaces and advocate for fair, accessible transportation. She champions the cultural and economic contributions of LA’s communities, ensuring equity and inclusion guide our mission.
Alex holds a master’s in urban and regional planning from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s in architecture from Universidad de las Américas Puebla.
As Narrative Strategist at Los Angeles Walks, Paula brings a communications background and a passion for equity to advancing pedestrian advocacy and storytelling that centers community voices. She draws on experience in media production, strategy, and grassroots organizing to highlight the cultural and social dimensions of mobility justice.
As a Mexican immigrant, Paula connects her lived experience to her work, collaborating with local organizations like Wild Wolf Cycling Collective, No More Ghost Bikes LA, and the Bicycle Kitchen. A lifelong cyclist who has lived most of her life without a car, she envisions a more walkable, welcoming, and people-first Los Angeles. Paula holds a Media & Communications degree from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Department of Social Sciences and Humanities) and a Cinematography major from the same institution.

A lifelong resident of Wilmington, California, and a proud mother and grandmother, Gaby draws on her lived experience to connect families with resources in transportation, pedestrian safety, and public space advocacy. She has served on Metro’s South Bay Service Council, Best Start Wilmington, and is an active member of I Heart Wilmington and Wilmington Sin Fronteras. Through her work, Gaby ensures that community voices remain at the center of shaping a future where streets and public spaces are safe for all.
