Airport2Park: A Santa Monica Airport Perimeter Walk
Join Michael Brodsky, a Professor at Loyola Marymount University and a Board Member of the Santa Monica Airport2Park Foundation for a walk around the entirety of Santa Monica Airport. See a part of the city that most people rarely see and even fewer pedestrians actually get to use.
We will walk the perimeter of Santa Monica Airport (SMO) in order to see and learn about the current issues and community impacts relating to this facility. We will hear about potential creative new proposals to transform and repurpose this property into a future grand park that will be open and accessible to all.
Our walk will take us along the security fence, through parking lots, near jet hangers, a day care facility, up Bundy Drive's sidewalks, directly under the blast wall and path of landing jets, and down through the current Airport Park expansion site, where a former airplane parking lot is now being repurposed into the first stages of a park designed by noted architect, Mark Rios.
We will take a break at the Airport Observation Deck, where we will see the airport runway with specular views from the the Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean. We will hear from community members currently impacted by this facility and have a chance to talk about challenge of achieving the goals of turning an airport into a park, which has already been done in San Francisco, Chicago and Berlin.
Finally, we will continue past the older hangers on non-aviation land which are now used as artist studios, galleries and a theater. We will continue around the western portion, up an alley and back to Clover Park.
